World Cup Reminds Everyone What America is All About

Freddy, a German national visiting the USA for the World Cup, was about to take a long walk in the rain. That’s when a hotel receptionist offered him and his companions a free hour-long ride to ensure they arrived dry and on time.

As Freddy stated on X, “I love Americans.” Over the past two weeks, he’s become a social media sensation as he’s trekked across our beautiful country documenting his love and appreciation for all things USA.

Freddy isn’t an isolated case. A deli owner in New Jersey gave away free sandwiches to a recently engaged British couple.

A dad in suburban Boston made breakfast for a group of Scottish fans staying at an Air BnB in his neighborhood the morning of a match, and  was given a ticket to attend in return.

Kansas State’s marching band greeted the Algerian national team by playing their national anthem.

Visitors from a variety of countries have gone viral over their amazement at Buc-ees, In-N-Out, Waffle House, and America’s other fast food culinary delights.

These are just a few of the many examples of the way the United States has embraced the world as we co-host the 23rd edition of the World Cup.

One thing all of these stories have in common; they showcase the hospitality and kindness of the American people.

They also stand in stark contrast to the negative image of our country cultivated in both domestic and international media outlets.

As we get closer and closer to America’s semiquincentennial, it’s nice to see the best parts of our country receive the recognition they rightly deserve.

Whatever our flaws, the World Cup is a reminder to everyone that our country is still a place where visitors are welcomed with open arms, where generosity comes naturally, and where everyday people go out of their way to help others feel at home.

That’s truly what the world is discovering this summer, and what America is all about.
