Poll: Majority of Americans Want Government Power Returned to States

Cost of Living

July 24, 2025

A new Napolitan News Service poll finds that 61% of Americans believe state and local governments could handle all governing responsibilities except national security, Social Security, and Medicare with only 26% disagreeing.

This data reflects a growing frustration with the size and reach of the federal government—and a desire to shift more power back to the states and local communities. Americans are increasingly convinced that when it comes to solving everyday problems, Washington isn’t just ineffective—it’s making things worse.

Nowhere is this more obvious than with inflation. Americans continue to struggle with the rising cost of living, and they know exactly what’s fueling it: out-of-control federal spending and heavy-handed regulation. Across the board, voters are connecting the dots between federal overreach and economic hardship. They’re tired of paying more for less while politicians in Washington push policies that only deepen the crisis.

What Americans are demanding is not more “solutions” from the top—they want less interference. They want their local and state governments to take the lead on everything from education and infrastructure to public safety and economic policy. These governments are more accountable, more efficient, and more responsive to the people they serve.

That’s a sharp contrast to what we’ve seen out of Washington. Whether it’s passing massive spending bills, imposing nationwide mandates, or regulating entire industries into paralysis, the federal government has stretched far beyond its original purpose—and ordinary Americans are paying the price.

At Our America, we believe this poll confirms what we’ve heard for years from citizens across the country: people want the government to do less so they can do more. They want to pursue opportunity without being crushed by taxes, regulations, or inflation caused by reckless federal mismanagement.

Americans from all walks of life are saying the same thing: get the federal government out of the way. Let local communities decide what works best for them. Trust the people closest to the problem to find the right solution.

The federal government still has an important role to play in national defense, border security, and maintaining critical programs like Social Security and Medicare. But for everything else, Americans are ready to hand the reins back to their state houses, city halls, and school boards.

This latest polling reinforces that message loud and clear. If we want to fix inflation, restore trust in government, and strengthen our economy, it starts with getting Washington out of the business of running our lives.
