WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 07, 2025) — Our America Foundation and Fair For All have filed a federal civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, alleging the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) violated Title VI and the First Amendment.

The complaint stems from UDC’s refusal to host a proposed debate titled “Is the American Dream Alive for Black Americans?”—featuring diverse Black and Hispanic panelists—on the grounds that the event did not align with the university’s mission. UDC’s own correspondence cited race and identity as factors in its decision.

“Universities should encourage open dialogue, not gatekeep ideas based on race or viewpoint,” said Gabriel Nadales, National Director of Our America. “This decision sets a dangerous precedent.”

Monica Harris, Executive Director of Fair For All, added: “Diversity of thought is essential. Silencing respectful perspectives is discrimination, plain and simple.”

The complaint calls for a public apology, policy reforms, and staff training to ensure UDC upholds its legal and moral obligations to free expression and equal opportunity.
