OAF’s Civil Rights Complaint Against UDC Generates Media Coverage

Earlier this month, Our America Foundation (OAF) along with our allies at Fair for All (Fair) filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) Office for Civil Rights against the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

Our complaint alleged UDC violated Title VI and the First Amendment, after they refused to host a proposed debate titled “Is the American Dream Alive for Black Americans?” due to race and identity issues.

More information on our complaint can be found in the official press release, along with this post on Fair’s website.

The complaint has generated some attention in the media, with a full write-up in National Review Online along with coverage from Minding the Campus.

The Daily Signal published an op-ed co-authored by OAF’s Gabriel Nadales and Fair’s Monica Harris, which explained why this complaint was so significant.

As stated in the op-ed; “Gatekeeping ideas based on race, identity, or ideology doesn’t bring us together. A fairer, more united America demands that we treat every voice as equal under the law and worthy of being heard.

While OAF and Fair have yet to hear back from the DOE’s Office for Civil Rights, it’s not uncommon for complaints to take several months to resolve as they’re fully investigated by government officials.

We remain optimistic that the proper action will be taken, and we will continue to keep you updated as this situation develops.
