The situation that recently unfolded in Minnesota between federal immigration authorities and local officials is far more complicated than either side wants to admit.
Our National Director Gabe Nadales recently weighed in on this topic with an op-ed published in the Orange County Register last week.
Gabe’s op-ed is a good-faith attempt to objectively evaluate the issue and offer solutions that uphold public safety, while reaffirming respect for the duties of both federal and state authorities.
As Gabe wrote in the op-ed:
What’s needed is a clear and workable division of labor, backed by transparent accountability. That division cannot exist if local political leaders bind law enforcement with absolutist mandates that prioritize symbolism over public safety. Federal agencies must respect local limits and priorities, but local officials also have a responsibility to cooperate in good faith when serious threats emerge.
